THE HOME FRONT(Web Series) Based on extensive research and interviews with real-world military wives, mothers, girlfriends, and daughters, The Home Front captures the real struggles of such women, both mundane and profound, and how a war that sometimes seems so far away has real impact on our daily lives. They are raising children without their fathers, laboring to pay the rent and keep their lives on track, all the while reminded of their worst fear every time the phone or the doorbell rings. Yet, these women are also proud, participating in a most noble and essential patriotic duty. They are comforted knowing the servicemen and women they love are fighting for freedom, democracy, and the American way of life. But one by one, the women discover the irreconcilable differences between their deepest beliefs and their continued support of the war. A conflict arises within the group and the home front becomes almost as perilous as the one overseas. The Home Front will appear as a non-fiction documentary—albeit with a modern and edgy style, but in reality the program is entirely scripted and uses hired actors to play the various roles. Taking advantage of the unique immediacy of the web, the story is captured through the lens of a young film student who sets out to document the lives of these women and post weekly dispatches on the Web. Her videos are deceptively simple, seemingly handmade, but employing cutting-edge shooting and editing techniques to condense complex storylines into short 6-8 minute episodes—carefully crafted to seem unscripted and naturalistic, yet taut and dramatic. By blending the familiar casual intimacy of YouTube confessionals with the sharply written and meticulously structured drama of the best television, The Home Front will prove to be a paragon of new media storytelling. Featuring short episodes with enticing plots that keep viewers hooked, it will be pointedly provocative, with the flexibility to integrate current events into the story as they unfold in the real world. |
